Vesuvius Replaces Natural Gas with Biomethane, Becoming the Group’s First Factory Worldwide to Achieve NetZero

The challenge

A global leader in molten metal flow engineering, Vesuvius was tasked with replacing natural gas at one of its 54 plants worldwide to make significant progress in its decarbonization journey.

Biomethane-Powered Plant

In 2024, Vesuvius signed a five-year contract with Gás Verde for the supply of 8 million m³ of biomethane to its factory in Campo Grande, Rio de Janeiro. The distribution is carried out via biomethane-powered trucks from Gás Verde’s plant in Seropédica (RJ).

Results

With this volume, Vesuvius expects to prevent the emission of over 15,500 tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere over five years, reducing pollutants at its manufacturing unit by 99%. The plant will be the group’s first worldwide to achieve NetZero by 2030.

Fabiano Barros, Sustainability Manager at Vesuvius – Latin America

“We identified biomethane as the best alternative energy solution. Today, we are able to avoid nearly 90 tons of CO₂ emissions into the atmosphere during our process. We are the first Vesuvius unit worldwide to achieve Net Zero by the end of 2024. This is a strategic goal for our business, and with this partnership with Gás Verde, we were able to achieve it six years ahead of schedule.”
