Haleon Partners with Gás Verde to Achieve Carbon Neutrality in Brazil by 2025

The challenge

Owner of brands like Advil, Eno, Centrum, Sensodyne, and Corega, the British company Haleon faced the challenge of decarbonizing its factory in Brazil. The company’s global goal is to achieve 100% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.

Replacing Natural Gas

In October 2023, Haleon signed a contract with Gás Verde to supply 830,000 m³ of biomethane annually to power the boilers at its plant in Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro. Produced from the decomposition of landfill waste, biomethane serves the same purpose as the natural gas previously used by the factory.

Results

In a short time, the plant is now running 100% on biomethane and has become the first within the group globally to use the biofuel.

By replacing natural gas, purchasing renewable energy, and generating its own solar energy, Haleon’s factory in Brazil will achieve net-zero CO₂ emissions by 2025.

What Haleon says

Graziela Soares, Industrial Director of Haleon Brazil

“It’s a win-win solution. Initially, we maintain neutral costs, and starting in the sixth year, we begin to save compared to gas supplied by the public network. In addition to contributing to the environment, we ensure a competitive advantage in costs.”
