The First Brewery in Brazil Powered 100% by Biomethane

The Challenge

In partnership with Gás Verde, Ambev turned to biomethane to advance its decarbonization journey. The challenge was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at its brewery in Cachoeiras de Macacu, Rio de Janeiro.
Just 150 kilometers away lies the Gás Verde plant in Seropédica, which produces 130,000 m³ of biomethane daily from the decomposition of waste in a landfill.

A Substitute for Vegetable Oil

100% renewable, Gás Verde’s biomethane is being used by Ambev to generate steam in the brewery’s fermentation boilers, replacing vegetable oil. A total of 450,000 m³ of biomethane is supplied to the brewery each month.

Results

As the first brewery in Brazil powered 100% by biomethane, Ambev’s unit in Cachoeiras de Macacu has reduced greenhouse gas emissions from its manufacturing process by over 90%, contributing to an overall reduction of 84% for the entire facility. This initiative has become a success story within the multinational.
